How to Do Tempo Push-Ups

Tempo push-ups slow down the lowering phase to multiply time under tension — a simple way to make push-ups much harder without any equipment.

Muscles worked

Chest, shoulders, triceps, core.

Why tempo push-ups works

Slowing the eccentric (lowering) portion of a lift increases the total time your muscles spend under load for the same number of reps, which is one of the more reliable ways to add difficulty without needing extra weight. It also exposes weak points in your control — most people feel far less stable at a 3-second descent than at a normal pace, which is exactly the range that needs the work.

How to do tempo push-ups

  1. Set up in a strong push-up position, body in a straight line.
  2. Lower over a slow 3-second count.
  3. Pause for 1 second just above the floor.
  4. Push up in 1 second.
  5. Repeat, keeping every rep slow and controlled.

Common mistakes

Who should modify or avoid this

This is more demanding on the shoulders than a standard push-up because of the extended time under tension, so build a base of regular push-ups first. If you have shoulder impingement or wrist pain, work on knee tempo push-ups before progressing to the full version.

Sets and reps

3 sets of 6–10 slow reps. Because each rep lasts longer, you will need fewer than with regular push-ups.

Frequently asked questions

Why do tempo push-ups?

Slowing the rep increases time under tension, which builds strength and control — great when normal push-ups become easy.

How slow should the lowering be?

A 3-second count is a good starting point. If you can't control that pace with a straight body line, reduce reps or switch to a knee tempo push-up until you can.

Do tempo push-ups build more muscle than regular push-ups?

They can, because of the added time under tension, but consistency and progressive overload over weeks matter more than any single variation.
