Ideal Weight Calculator

What should you weigh for your height? There's no single perfect number, but this calculator gives a sensible healthy range using the BMI method plus the classic Devine formula.

How "ideal weight" is estimated

We show two views. The BMI healthy range is every weight that gives a BMI of 18.5–24.9 at your height — a span, not a single figure. The Devine formula gives one classic reference value (originally used for medication dosing):

Why it's a range, not a number

Healthy weight depends on muscle, frame size, age and body composition — things a height-based formula can't see. A muscular person can be "above" their ideal weight yet very lean. Treat the range as a guide and use body fat and how you feel to refine it.

Limitations

The Devine formula dates to 1974 and was designed for drug-dosing calculations in clinical settings, not as a fitness target — it doesn't account for muscle mass, frame size, or sex-specific body composition differences beyond the basic adjustment shown above.

Frequently asked questions

What is my ideal weight?

There is no single ideal weight — a healthy range for your height (BMI 18.5–24.9) is more realistic than one number. Body composition matters more.

Is the Devine formula accurate?

It is a rough reference originally made for drug dosing, not a personalised target. Use it alongside the BMI range and body-fat percentage.

Should I aim for the low end?

Not necessarily. Anywhere in the healthy range can be appropriate depending on your muscle mass, frame, and health markers.

Why does the Devine formula give a different number than the BMI range?

They're built for different purposes — the BMI range reflects a broad healthy span, while Devine gives one reference point historically used for dosing, not a fitness ideal. Expect them to diverge, especially at taller or shorter heights.
